We welcome Autumn!

Today marks the official first day of Autumn. We can feel it already in the cooler evenings and bright, crisp days. This is the best time of year to plant perennials and shrubs. The ground has been warmed all year and will continue to be just right for good root growth. The cooler temperatures help too; the break from the heat helps things perk up, plus the ground is not as quick to dry up. That said, of course, new plantings need water, so make sure you make note of the rain, and give long, slow drinks in dry periods. Arrived fresh in our shop this week:   Lots of pansies, mums, red lettuce, red mustard, Redbor Kale, 'Citronelle' Heuchera, Lavender, Rosemary, and more. All of these make interesting fall and winter planted arrangements. We'll be adding more in the next few weeks, we also got some evergreen shrubs just the right size for arrangements, so we are ready to help you spruce up your planters for some fall color and interest. ...

New Arrival!

It has been a while since our last post, but that is because we have been busy getting in all sorts of new things. Now that you've likely gotten your plants in for the season, maybe it's time to do some sprucing up on the patio, porch, deck, etc. We have some new exciting lines of outdoor/indoor products to share with you. These tabletops, bowls, saucers and more are one of the most exciting new products we've found in a while. They are all one-of-a-kind, all handmade by an artist named John Lamos. They are light-weight, yet durable for outside, and they can be planted or used as birdbaths, fountains, or just a centerpiece as they are, to a stunning effect. Here's a link about the Artist: http://johnlamos.com/About_John.html

Plants of the Week

Julia Child Rose Bush This is a stunning rose, scented with a sweet licorice fragrance that combines old-fashioned charm with disease resistance and blooming performance like the knock out types. They grow to a bit larger than knock-outs, about 5'x5'.  Coleus This is a favorite annual plant with a wide selection of varities.  Some prefer sun, some prefer shade, or a mix of both.  They are vigorous plants so if you're planting them in a container, be sure it is large enough to allow growth; although you can trim them back to keep them full and bushy.  They typically outlast most annuals into the late Autumn and you can enjoy them inside too, by taking cuttings and rooting them.

Plants of the Week

Meadow Sage with California Poppies Perennial of the week:  Saliva. There are several groups of Saliva that we carry, some that are hardy here and others that are grown as annuals in this climate.   The Meadow Sages are in full bloom right now in the garden. They are an excellent plant for a sunny cutting border where you want spiky clumps of dark purple to bright blues.  Butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted to them and you can remove faded blooms to encourage repeat flowering.  They are also drought tolerant, but can take our humid summers as well. We also have several types of common sage, Salvia greggii or Autumn Sage as well as others like Mexican and Brazilian Sage, which are spectacular in late Summer into Autumn. Annual of the week:  Tuberous Begonias There are several types of tuberous begonias, but the favorites this time of the year are the double, non-stop varieties, that produce 2-4 inch blooms that are brightly colored.  Some ...
